Sen. Arlen Specter completed his last scheduled round of chemotherapy on Monday and said he planned to celebrate with a martini and dinner with friends.
The 78-year-old Republican from Pennsylvania traveled to Washington on Monday after receiving the 12th and final dose at a Philadelphia hospital. He worked all day, as he has throughout the three months of treatment.
Specter, who lost his hair from the chemotherapy, described the treatments as "tough but tolerable." He said at times he was left feeling tired and lethargic.
"It's good to have the chemotherapy behind me and it takes a little time to get all the chemicals out of the system, but I'm feeling pretty good and raring to go," Specter said.
The senator learned in April he had an early recurrence of Hodgkin's disease, which is a cancer of the lymphatic system. He was treated for the same type of cancer in 2005.
Earlier in the year, he published a book, "Never Give In: Battling Cancer in the Senate," in which he credited hard work with getting him through the six months of chemotherapy.
He will undergo additional tests.
