Hundreds of pounds of garbage have washed onto a 10-mile stretch of Lake Michigan beaches in Michigan.
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the source of the garbage, which includes medical waste such as prescription drug bottles and even needles.
Petty Officer Ryan Bedes of the Coast Guard station in Manistee says some of the items carry Wisconsin names and addresses.
Officials closed a Manistee beach where some junk piles were up to eight inches high before crews began hauling it away by the truckload. Authorities warned people to stay away from the trash.
The local health department took water samples from 21 beaches Monday for analysis.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has sent staffers to the area.
