Police say former Polish Foreign Minister Bronislaw Geremek has been killed in a car accident in western Poland.

Wielkopolski police spokeswoman Hanna Wachowiak says Geremek died after the Mercedes he was driving crashed into an oncoming car in western Poland on Sunday afternoon.

The 76-year-old Geremek served as a key adviser to Lech Walesa and the Solidarity trade union that helped topple communist rule in Poland.

He went on to serve as Poland's foreign minister from 1997-2000, and a member of European Parliament since 2004.
