A New Jersey university fired three paramedics after images surfaced showing a hazing incident involving robes and crosses that suggest Ku Klux Klan attire, according to the Star-Ledger in Newark.
Cell phone camera images of the incident Sunday show paramedic trainees in white robes clutching a makeshift wooden cross. In one photo, a paramedic wearing an "EMS" shirt seems to be adjusting one of the robes.
The Star-Ledger reported that the trainees are students from Northeastern University in Boston, according to the president of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where the incident occurred.
The university "has never and will never tolerate attitudes and behaviors that discriminate against any individual or group. The actions taken by the individuals in this instance are appalling," said a statement released by the university, which was continuing to investigate the incident.
