TORONTO – Canada's Federal Court has granted a stay of deportation against a U.S. deserter while it considers whether it will hear his case.
Sgt. Corey Glass, who was set to be ejected from Canada on Thursday, said he was thrilled at the reprieve.
However, he said he can't celebrate because a fellow American war dodger is still facing deportation.
Glass was seeking a judicial review of two rulings against him.
The court said Wednesday that Glass, 25, could stay until it decides whether to hear the two applications.
Like other American soldiers who fled to Canada, Glass's claim for refugee status has been turned down on the grounds he faces prosecution in the U.S., not persecution.
