Police are investigating a shooting that left a 3-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his neck.

The boy is being treated at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center for injuries described by police as life-threatening.

Lt. Pat Ivey of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said there were multiple guns in the home and police were trying to determine what happened. Ivey said the child's mother and boyfriend were at home Sunday evening when the shooting occurred.

The couple called 911 and began driving the boy to the hospital and were met a few blocks away by a rescue squad.

Police have not released the name of the boy or the adults.
