MONTPELIER, Vt. – A Northfield man is facing simple assault charges that he hit Gov. Jim Douglas in the face with a cream pie while the governor was marching in the Montpelier Independence Day parade on Thursday evening.
Witnesses said Michael Manning, 22, was wearing a Santa Claus suit.
Manning will be charged with simple assault, police said.
Douglas's campaign coordinator Denise Casey said the governor was not injured and he continued in the parade after cleaning his face. Douglas went on to two other Fourth of July events on Thursday.
Barre Mayor Thomas Lauzon said he was walking with Douglas and helped wrestle Manning to the ground.
