Shaquille O'Neal Wants to Help Residents in Florida Facing Foreclosure

Basketball star Shaquille O'Neal believes he has a plan to help residents of Orlando, Fla., facing foreclosure on their homes. Problem is, he hasn't yet figured out what that plan is.

Shaq received more than 2,000 e-mails from desperate Floridians looking for help from the celebrity after failing to receive assistance from mortgage companies, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Belinda Petroccia, a resident of Florida's Orange County who faces foreclosure on her house, said "there are so many shysters out there who take advantage of you financially and emotionally. When I saw this, I thought, ' That's what I need — maybe Shaq can help.' "

O'Neal wants to buy the mortgages of people in Petroccia's situation, then provide new mortgages with better terms. O'Neal would be able to earn a small profit from his venture, and homeowners wouldn't have to leave their houses.

While Curtis Cooper, a mortgage broker and realtor working with O'Neal on the project, said the basketball star is serious about the project, O'Neal hasn't yet formed a concrete plan as to how to execute it.

"He said, 'Let's just go out and help as many people as we can,' " said Cooper. "He's sincere about it."
