NC wildlife refuge fire spreads smoke to Va.

COLUMBIA, N.C. (AP) -- Firefighters are working to contain a massive wildfire at a federal wildlife refuge in remote eastern North Carolina.

The blaze is spreading smoke hundreds of miles into Virginia.

A meteorologist in Wakefield, Virginia, more than 80 miles away, says he can smell the smoke.

Officials hope lighter winds will help them control the blaze that began earlier this week. It has burned nearly 29,000 acres in and around the Pocosin (puh-KOH'-sin) Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. The fire was only 30 percent contained this morning.

No injuries or structure damage have been reported.
