A 61-year-old man died after doctors allegedly wrongly diagnosed him with lung cancer and removed a healthy lung in an attempt to help him live longer, the Daily Mail reported on Wednesday.
An inquest into John Turner’s death revealed that his "cancerous" lung was completely healthy and doctors reportedly kept the results from Turner’s family until after he died, according to the Daily Mail.
Turner, who was married and had four children, complained of chest pains in the summer of 2006, and doctors suspected he had asbestosis, a non-cancerous lung illness.
"Further tests showed mesothelioma was seen but not conclusive," Mohatassim Al-Jlbury, a consultant at Furness General Hospital in Cumbria, England, said at the inquest.
Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer associated with asbestos. Turner was sent for more tests at another hospital, where the cancer was confirmed, but another doctor said the tests were misinterpreted.
"I said it was consistent with, not that they had it. I won't be using that term again," said James Johnson, a consultant pathologist at Blackpool Royal Victoria.
