Atlanta police are on the hunt for a fugitive hospital worker they say may have stolen a dead woman’s wedding and engagement rings.

Detective P.J. Roberson says Katherine Armstrong, 35, was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital after an April 30 car crash.

Armstrong didn’t survive the wreck but when her husband Alan, an Iraq combat veteran, went to recover her personal effects he noticed his wife’s rings were missing, MyFOXAtlanta reported.

According to Roberson, 54-year-old social worker Tacuma Jawara was assigned to take care of Armstrong's property and was caught on camera carrying a bag believed to hold her rings.

Police obtained an arrest warrant Wednesday, but said Jawara thwarted the planned arrest by calling in sick to work. They said he then called and promised to turn himself in by the end of the day, but never showed up, according to MyFOXAtlanta.

Armstrong's rings are valued at $5,000.
