Los Angeles police say a suspected drunken driver was shot when he threw a punch at someone in another vehicle who would not help him after a freeway crash.

Officer Karen Smith said the 26-year-old man was driving south in the northbound lanes of the Harbor Freeway early Sunday when he wrecked his 1990 Nissan. The man walked down a freeway ramp and flagged down a passing car.

He told investigators that when the three people in the vehicle would not help him, he tried to punch one of them and was shot twice in the shoulder.

Police did not release the man's name, but said he was hospitalized and was stable late Sunday. He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Smith said no arrests had been made in the shooting.
