Because of his impending divorce and a covenant he signed when he went to work at Wheaton College 20 years ago, English professor Kent Gramm is losing his wife and his job at the same time.

Gramm tells the Chicago Sun-Times he knew when divorce proceedings started that he might have to resign.

Gramm has declined to discuss the cause of the divorce with college officials, as required under school policy, so he is resigning to avoid being fired.

Wheaton students and teachers must sign a Statement of Faith and Community Covenant that spells out suitable behavior.

"You sign the statement when you accept employment at the college," said Sarah Clark, director of media relations. "Everyone knows it's part of the deal."
