ROME – Italian news reports say police have arrested 16 suspects in a sweep against an organized crime syndicate.
The arrests early Monday were made in Crotone, in the southern Calabria region where the powerful 'ndrangheta mob group is based.
The ANSA and Apcom news agencies say the suspects also were allegedly involved in the murder of two rival clansmen in 2000. The reports say police also have discovered three warehouses with explosives, guns and automatic rifles.
The operation is part of a probe that led to the arrest of 38 suspected mobsters earlier this month. They had terrorized businesses in the area with attacks and firebombings, if they refused to pay protection money.
