FREDERICK, Md. – A sinkhole on westbound Interstate 70 in Frederick has gotten substantially worse, the Maryland State Highway Administration said Thursday.
A section of pavement in the right-hand lane has collapsed, leaving a hole 14 feet wide and 20 feet deep near the East South Street exit, MSHA spokesman David Buck said.
He said both westbound lanes will be closed all day and into the night.
The left-hand shoulder will be open to traffic, but the agency is urging drivers to take detours at exits 62 and 56.
Buck said he is confident that the lanes will be open by Friday morning.
