Health officials say a girl is listed in serious condition at a Fargo hospital for a presumed case of meningococcal meningitis.

Health officials say the girl was admitted to the hospital on Monday, and her health is improving. Her name and age have not been released.

The state Health Department says it has notified people who have been in contact with the child and given them the option of antibiotic treatment.

Meningitis is a bacterial infection of the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

The disease primarily affects children, killing 10 percent of those infected.
