Police say they have arrested a Bronx teacher after she bit an 11-year-old student on the shoulder at the child's elementary school.

Police say the 44-year-old teacher is charged with third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Both are misdemeanors.

Police could not immediately say what motivated the teacher to bite the student. They say she bit him while they were in the cafeteria of P.S. 79.

The mother of the child refused medical attention for him. Police say his skin was not broken by the bite.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Education says the teacher will be reassigned away from the school and students, pending the outcome of the case.
