The driver of a Des Moines city bus that hit a blind man in downtown Des Moines has been fired.

Susan Jane Leveke-Meyers' employment with the city has been under review since her bus hit a pedestrian on March 26.

Brad Miller of the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority said Tuesday that she was fired after the city reviewed the incident and her overall record. Officials say she had eight other on-the-job accidents in about seven years on the job.

Police say 64-year-old Roger Christenson had the right of way when Leveke-Meyers' bus hit him in an intersection, causing serious head injuries. She was ticketed and fined $96 for failure to have control of the vehicle.

Christenson was initially listed in critical condition at Mercy Medical Center, but a hospital spokeswoman says he appears to be recovering.
