Zimbabwe Authorities Release American, British Journalists on Bail

Lawyers say an American and a Briton detained on charges of reporting illegally on the Zimbabwean election have been released on bail.

Harrison Nkomo, a lawyer representing the foreigners, says their passports are being held and they are not allowed to leave the country. He says the American, New York Times correspondent Barry Bearak, has been moved to a medical clinic after injuring his back in a fall in his cell.

The Briton is staying at his country's embassy. They were each released on bail of 300 million Zimbabwean dollars, which is about $6 at the black market rate or $10,000 at the official rate.
