The 42 students in Mosul that were kidnapped by gunmen have been released without harm.

Iraqi authorities say gunmen had kidnapped the college students traveling in a bus near the northern city of Mosul.

Brig. Gen. Khalif Abdul-Sattar says three other students on a second bus were injured when gunmen opened fire as the driver sped away.

Abdul-Sattar says the ambush occurred early Sunday on the main highway linking Mosul with Baghdad.

It is not immediately clear where the students were traveling from or where they were headed.

Mosul is located 225 miles northwest of Baghdad.
