A New York City man has been sentenced to a maximum of 29 years in prison in the death of his 7-year-old stepdaughter.
Nixzmary Brown's 2006 death stunned many New Yorkers. She had been bound to a chair, starved and forced to urinate in a litter box before she was killed.
Cesar Rodriguez was convicted of manslaughter and other counts last month in connection with her death.
The 29-year-old Rodriguez told the court Thursday that he loved Nixzmary and that he was accused of something he didn't do. His lawyer has cast the girl's mother as the real killer and Nixzmary as a troublemaker.
Rodriguez received the maximum 25 years on manslaughter, and four more years for the lesser counts.
