Should you be allowed to talk and cross the road at the same time?
Not if you're talking on a cell phone, according to a bill now making it's way through the Illinois Legislature.
The bill, introduced in January by Rep. Kenneth Dunkin (D-Springfield), would fine a pedestrian up to $25 for using a cell phone while crossing the road. The idea is that distracted callers are more likely to get hit by a car.
The bill is a long way from becoming law but already has prompted a mix of reaction, from objections to government intrusion to support for the concept, if not necessarily the details, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
"Put me in jail," Chicagoan Eve Decker, 45, told the newspaper. "I'm not paying for talking on a phone. ... It's no different than if I'm walking with a friend and talking."
