A jury has given the death penalty to a man convicted of beating a pregnant woman, stuffing her in a suitcase and dumping it in a landfill.

Rosendo Rodriguez, a 28-year-old from San Antonio, was sentenced Tuesday after the jury deliberated for three hours. He was convicted on two counts of capital murder Friday.

The body of 29-year-old Summer Baldwin, her unborn child still inside, was found in the Lubbock landfill in 2005. The case was moved to the Panhandle city of Canyon because of pretrial publicity.

Experts testified that Baldwin, who was a prostitute, may have been alive when Rodriguez stuffed her in the suitcase and tossed it into a large trash bin.
