A 4-year-old girl was rescued from an SUV submerged in a retention pond while still in her car seat after the vehicle slid on an icy street into the water.

Indianapolis police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Mount said Sarah Lopez was conscious and in stable condition at an Indianapolis hospital.

Forty-one-year-old Shawn Dilick freed the girl and gave her CPR after her mother, Albertina Lopez, lost control of the car Thursday. The vehicle plunged into the pond in a subdivision on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

Albertina Lopez escaped through a back door and yelled for help. Several neighbors and passers-by rushed to her aid before rescue workers arrive.
