It's a boy; a very big boy.

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore says a 290-pound male elephant calf was born about 9 p.m. Wednesday night at the zoo's Elephant Barn. The zoo says his 24-year-old mother, named Felix, delivered the baby after about an hour of hard labor.

The delivery is the first elephant birth in the zoo's 132-year history.

The zoo says the new arrival stood up just minutes after he was born and is 42 inches tall. He appears to be in excellent health.

Zoo officials say the calf and his mom won't be on public display for a while so they will have time to bond.
