The shorter the man is, the more likely he is to suffer from bouts of the green-eyed monster, especially when it comes to romance, according to a new study published in the journal of Evolution and Human Behavior.

European men told Spanish and Dutch researchers from the Universities of Groningen and Valenciahas that they felt most threatened by romantic rivals who were attractive, rich and strong, according to a report from the Australian news agency AAP. The most jealously was displayed by shorter men, researchers said.

Because male height is associated with attractiveness, dominance, and reproductive success, taller men may be less jealous, the researchers said.

Women, on the other hand, were most jealous of beauty and charm. Tall and short women were most prone to jealousy, with medium-height females feeling the most relaxed, AAP reported.

The study surveyed 549 men and women in the Netherlands and Spain.
