A Japanese inmate at the Fuchu prison committed suicide by stabbing himself with a chopstick, the Mainichi Daily News reported Monday.

The inmate, who was not identified, stabbed himself in the back of the head with the sharp end of a broken chopstick on Feb. 19. He was treated at a Tokyo hospital for his injuries, but died Sunday in the Fuchu Prison infirmary, the Mainichi Daily News reported.

The man had begun his sentence in March 2006.
