American Airlines Flight With Nose Gear Trouble Lands Safely in Miami

An American Airlines flight to Chicago landed safely in Miami, where it was diverted because of nose gear trouble.

Flight 862 landed at Miami International Airport at about 3:45 p.m. It had taken off from West Palm Beach but soon had trouble.

Pilots of the MD-80 jet first burned off fuel as a precaution before landing. Airport spokesman Greg Chin said there are about 130 people aboard the plane.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said such incidents aren't common, but "crews are well trained to handle these situations."

The problem was either with the nose gear or the door of the aircraft, according to Bergen.
