Authorities Charge S.C. Man for Starting Wildfire by Burning Trash

Authorities say a fire that destroyed five South Carolina homes and forced the evacuation of 60 families was started by a man burning trash.

A forestry official says 31-year-old Steve Matern was ticketed for allowing an illegal burn to escape. He faces up to a $465 fine and 30 days in jail.

A telephone number for Matern was not in service Tuesday.

Authorities were called to the fire Saturday and initially put out the blaze. But the fire rekindled Sunday with dry, windy conditions and spread to more than 240 acres.

Some 60 homes were briefly evacuated in Conway, which is about 15 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach.

No injuries were reported.
