An 18-month-old boy who had only just learned to walk has been run over and killed by his own father in a freak family tragedy. Jake Younger was knocked over as his dad reversed his car outside the family home in Gateshead.

Grandfather Alan Younger, 55, gave the toddler the kiss of life but was unable to save him.

The boy died in hospital hours later.

Dad Neil, 29, was reversing the family Freelander when it hit Jake, the Newcastle Chronicle said.

Younger, who lives in the same street, told the paper: "Neil came running along the street with Jake in his arms shouting 'Alan I need help Alan I need help'.

"The bairn had blood on his face and I think he was unconscious.

"I brought him into the house and lay him on to the rug in the front room and I gave him mouth to mouth, the kiss of life, and I thought I brought him back."

He added: "Jake was just starting to get on his feet, he's a lovely little thing, he loves everyone and they love him."

The incident happened in Greenford, in Kibblesworth.

Brian Coulson said neighbors were shocked by the tragedy.

"I went outside and the Freelander was just jacked up on one side," he said.

"The whole street is in shock."
