A teenager playing with a shotgun he thought was unloaded accidentally shot and killed a friend.
William "Kane" Krinn, 18, was hanging out with two friends in the garage of a home on Tuesday when one of the teens pointed a 12-gauge shotgun at him and pulled the trigger, police said.
Krinn was shot in his arm and chest and later died at Fort Wayne's Lutheran Hospital, authorities said. Police did not release the name of the teenager who fired the gun.
"It's a totally avoidable situation," Ossian Police Chief David Rigney said. "It could have been prevented."
At the time of the shooting the three friends were home from school, which was canceled because of dense fog.
Krinn was a junior at Norwell High School in Ossian, about 20 miles south of Fort Wayne. He played on the school's football team and hoped to join the armed forces, friends said.
"It's like a bad dream," said Blake Johnson, who met Krinn in third grade. "You feel like you should wake up, blink and it'd go away, but it doesn't."
