Some Kansas high school students who want to show their school spirit by changing the lyrics of the National Anthem face removal from sporting events, MyFOXKC.com reported.

Students at Shawnee Mission West High School in Shawnee Mission, Kan., face removal from sporting events if they substitute the lyric "Home of the Brave" with "Home of the Vikings," the station reported.

The students argue that Kansas City Chiefs fans change the last lyric of Francis Scott Key's anthem to "Home of the Chiefs" and they should be able to do the same under the First Amendment, MyFOXKC.com reported.

"I believe actually when they say 'Home of the Vikings,' it shows a lot of school pride to say that," Damon Delgado, a student at the school, told the station.

But the principal disagrees, saying it's disrespectful to those who fought and died for the United States to change the lyrics, MyFOXKC.com reported.

On Feb. 1, students protested the decision at a home basketball game; some duct taped their mouths and others chanted "First Amendment, First Amendment," the station reported.
