A standoff between police and an escaped prisoner has ended with two hostages safe and the prisoner in custody.

Police SWAT teams surrounded a Hamilton apartment building where the escaped prisoner had taken refuge.

Police spokesman Dave Crawford said they were talking to the man inside by telephone.

Police say 34-year-old James Bedinghaus ran from a prison transport van shortly after 7 a.m. Friday while being taken to court.

Bedinghaus was charged last week with aggravated robbery and grand theft of a vehicle. He is accused of robbing a Hamilton bank. He's been held on $200,000 bond.
