Police say a corporate jet with two people aboard crashed into the woods in a rural area of West Gardiner this evening shortly after taking off from the Augusta State Airport.

Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland says searchers with a local fire department are at the crash site about a mile off of High Street, but the fate of the occupants isn't yet known.

The plane took off as a winter storm with a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain was moving across the state.

McCausland says troopers, sheriff's deputies and game wardens were making their way to the crash site to assist.
