A corporate jet with two people aboard crashed into the woods in a rural area Friday evening shortly after taking off from the Augusta State Airport, police said.

Searchers with a local fire department were at the crash site about a mile off of High Street, but the fate of the occupants wasn't known, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police.

The plane took off as a winter storm with a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain was moving across the state.

Troopers, sheriff's deputies and game wardens were making their way to the crash site to assist, McCausland said.

The FAA did not immediately return phone calls for more information.
