OK, now I am going to get all political and kind of mushy on you all.
It has been quite the past couple of days for me. Upfront, I will remind those who have been so kind to watch me on FOX or read these columns that I do not do politics.
I do not think I even like politics very much. I think we live in the greatest country on the planet, but I also think that money and the media have taken the process of picking our elected officials and made it look and smell like a meat market. Well, into the fray I went for a couple of days.
I was lucky enough to co-host the Howie Carr radio show on January 5 through January 8, and traveled New Hampshire interviewing presidential candidates with Bill O’Reilly on January 6.
On radio I was able to interview Congressman Duncan Hunter, political adviser Bay Buchanan, her brother Pat and Congressman Ron Paul. On Saturday, I was chasing candidates with Bill O’Reilly and I got to see Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama, Gov. Mike Huckabee, Gov. Mitt Romney and Mayor Rudy Giuliani. For me, they were all very smart, very committed, very tired and very different.
The state of New Hampshire was the epicenter of the political and news world — and I got to be there to experience it for the first time.
Here is what I learned:
It works, big time. I do not like that Iowa and New Hampshire have this much power in the political process, but it is mostly unfettered by corruption, not backed by some military “hunta,” it is 100 percent “we the people” picking who we want for president of these United States of America.
It’s imperfect: candidates going from house to house, place to place, spending millions and answering stupid questions from a bored press.
It is beautiful. Look at Huckabee: no money, no organization and he kicked some serious ass in Iowa and did OK in New Hampshire. We have a black man who won in a state that is 98.5 percent white and has never elected a black man for anything — until now. We have a woman, who won in New Hampshire. Again mostly white people from all ages gave her the win over a black man. Amazing.
Where else on this planet could these things happen? Hell, 20 years ago you would have gotten shot for either event.
I have no dog in this fight. I think Obama is brilliant. I liked Biden. Duncan Hunter is very strong on defense. Mitt Romney has great experience and John McCain is one tough guy. It all might turn on the economy, as Iraq is beginning to turn around, at least tactically. There has not been an election like this since the ‘20s when Hoover was elected and the guy who ran against him was named Smith and got beaten because he was a Catholic.
What I saw, heard and learned is that this is one messed up, imperfect, beautiful system that the Founding Fathers designed and we have defended all these years. The next time you see some talking head or radio loudmouth bad-mouthing this thing of ours, ask him/her if they like it the way things are going in Pakistan or Russia?
