Officials in Philadelphia are looking for those responsible for torturing a pregnant pit bull to death and left it hanging off a fence near an abandoned school, MyFOXPhilly.com reports.

The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said someone left the dog hanging from a cord on a fence near an abandoned school at 27th Street and Huntingdon on the city's north side, the station reports.

Pieces of rocks and concrete used to beat the dog to death were found nearby covered in blood.

“Just to think someone could throw something at an animal like that and hear it cry out and continue to throw stuff at the dog," Officer Wayne Smith told the station. "It’s heartbreaking.”

A $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest has been offered. Anyone with information is asked to call the PSPCA at 215-426-6300.
