A 5-year-old Pennsylvania boy suffering from a rare neurological disease headed to China Tuesday for an experimental treatment.

Curtis Anthony is missing an enzyme needed to break down toxins in the brain. The disease, called Batten disease, is "slowly killing him," according to a report from CBS3.com.

Curtis, who is nearly blind, first started having seizures at the age of 3, but was not diagnosed with the disease until last April.

In China, Curtis will be the third patient ever to receive injections of stem cells, aiming to slow the progression of the disease. The treatment is still being tested in clinical trials in the U.S., according to his parents Paul Anthony and Donna Kapper.

The trip to China, the first of three, will cost $50,000. To make a donation go to curtisanthonyshope.org.
