A massive mudslide shut down U.S. Highway 30, the Lower Columbia River Highway, near Clatskanie, Ore., Tuesday, KOIN News 6 reported.
A swift-moving surge of soil, debris and trees had buried a stretch of the highway, destroying homes and vehicles in its path. At least two homes were wiped out in the slide. Witnesses described hearing a loud "roar" as the mud descended.
Area residents had been evacuated in anticipation of the slide, and no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Officials said the slide was the result of the severe storms that pounded the Northwest last week, KOIN reported.
Clatskanie, located northwest of Portland, has a population of 1,800.
