Officials at a Ft. Worth, Texas, high school have apologized to one of their students after a teacher used the "N" word — including writing it on the blackboard — during a class discussion of the Mark Twain classic "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."

Birdville Independent School District officials delivered the written apology to Ibrahim Mohamed, the only black student in his English class at Richland High School. Mohamed had asked his teacher to stop using the racial slur and instead refer to it as "the N word" when speaking about the novel.

The teacher reportedly refused his request, saying, "No, this is the way I have to teach it."
