Italian police have joined law enforcement officials from countries including the United States and Britain in an international task force aimed at fighting online child pornography, officials said Wednesday.

The Virtual Global Taskforce, set up in 2003, pools the efforts of law enforcement agencies in an effort to protect children from sex abuse online. It is made up of agencies from Australia, Britain and Canada, along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Interpol.

Members of the task force share information and intelligence, including on how children use the Internet and what risks they face, Italian police said.
