Two British fertility clinics are pioneering a groundbreaking treatment that would allow human eggs to be grown in laboratories, the London Telegraph reported Saturday.
According to the report, the eggs would be grown from ovarian tissue surgically removed from the woman and then frozen and stored at the laboratory until the woman is ready to conceive. At that time, the immature eggs contained in the tissue would be stimulated with hormones to grow into mature eggs, the Telegraph reported.
Though some aspects of the technique are already in use in current fertility treatment, perfecting the maturing of human eggs in a laboratory is still several years off, experts told the Telegraph. Fertility doctors said the new treatment could spare women the health risks and side effects of existing fertility treatments.
