The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say a fourth-grader was caught today at school with a gun in his waistband and two bullets in his hand.

School officials say another student saw the 9-year-old with the bullets and alerted a teaching assistant.

The teacher at Briarwood Elementary in northeast Charlotte walked the boy to the office and found a .380-caliber gun.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Sergeant David Schwob says officials are trying to figure out why the child had the gun.

It was not loaded, but the bullets the boy had in his hand were for a .380.

Schwob says the boy had been living with his 21-year-old cousin.
