New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin Doesn't File to Run for Louisiana Governor

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin opted not to join the race for governor of Louisiana after Thursday's qualifying deadline passed without Nagin signing up.

That left four major candidates among almost a dozen who qualified for the ballot: U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal, a Republican who has a commanding lead in the polls; State Sen. Walter Boasso, and Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell, both Democrats; and millionaire businessman John Georges, who dropped his Republican Party affiliation Thursday before signing up to run as an independent.

Incumbent Kathleen Blanco, a Democrat who beat Jindal four years ago, decided not to run for re-election after her approval ratings plummeted following the 2005 hurricanes, Katrina and Rita.
