A police SWAT team that entered a Newington synagogue in a potential stand-off situation has found no one inside, and a search for suspects continues.
Police responded to the Congregation B'nai Sholom on Church Street at about 4 a.m. for what they believed was a burglary in progress. Officers used a megaphone to ask the person or people inside to come out, and later threw an unknown object into the building.
A police dog was sent into the building shortly before 7:30 a.m., and SWAT team members followed. Officers did not find anyone during a nearly two-hour search of the building.
Three dirt motorcycles that were reported stolen from a neighbor's home were parked outside the synagogue.
Two schools near the synagogue delayed opening for two hours because of the incident.
