OAKLAND, Calif. – Demolition work on the Bay Bridge was moving along smoothly and on schedule after the span was closed for the weekend.
CalTrans officials said the work to cut away a 350-foot section of the bridge near Yerba Buena Island was almost complete.
The next step involves a tricky maneuver to install a prefabricated replacement section the size of a football field.
The Bay Bridge closure was being blamed for traffic tie-ups around other Bay Area bridges. But so far no serious gridlock had been reported.
The bridge was scheduled to reopen Tuesday at 5 a.m.
