The boyfriend of a New Jersey woman who disappeared last month has been tracked to Sicily, authorities said.
Investigators already knew that Rosario DiGirolamo bought a ticket to Milan, Italy on June 14 and flew there the same day and that he didn't use the return ticket he bought for June 28. On Monday they said they knew he was in Sicily, but didn't elaborate on how they know his whereabouts.
His girlfriend, Amy Giordano, who lived in Hightstown, has not been seen since June 7, days after she registered to vote. The couple's 1-year-old son, Michael, was found abandoned in a Newark, Del., parking lot on June 9. Police say DiGirolamo's cell phone was used in that area that day.
Pinned to the boy's diaper was a note that said his name was "John Vincent" and that his caregiver had no job or health insurance. "God have mercy on me," the anguished note read.
Delaware State Police have charged DiGirolamo with felony reckless endangerment and misdemeanor child abandonment.
DiGirolamo, 32, and Giordano, 27, had had a long affair, authorities believe.
DiGirolamo, who is considered a person of interest — but not officially a suspect — in his girlfriend's disappearance, lives with his wife and their son in a Millstone home that previously belonged to Stefano "Steve the Truck Driver" Vitabile, believed to be one of the top mobsters in New Jersey.
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said the FBI and Italian authorities are trying to get the precise whereabouts of DiGirolamo.
