Philanthropy is alive and well in this summer's Inc.com Best Lemonade Stand in America Contest. Kids across the country are discovering that doing good can be fun, too.
This week's winner, Elisabeth Kistner of Hopkinton, MA (click here to see profile and photo), raised money for the local respite center during her last lemonade sale, surprisingly, by offering all of her products for "free" — customers can pay what they want or have it for free. "On average I make between $150 and $200 in four to five hours," she says. Elisabeth runs her stand on a regular basis, always donating a portion of the proceeds to local causes.
Many more of this year's enterprising kid-trepreneurs are involved in fundraising efforts, such as Victoria in Kentucky, and the Lemonaid for Homeless Kids stand she runs with her friends. "Kids in the Bluegrass raised over $14,000 for our Salvation Army to help homeless kids," she says. They've raised $175 for their Salvation Army. Alexandria from Georgia, who, with her brothers and sisters, raised $278 for multiple sclerosis research, a disease her great aunt and a family friend both suffer from.
Go to www.bestlemonadestand.com to read more inspiring stories. And if you know a kid-trepreneur running a lemonade stand this summer, encourage them to log on, too. Entries are being accepted through Sept. 3, 2007; kids ages 5 to 12 are welcome to entire by sharing their stories and photos of themselves running a lemonade stand.
