LAWRENCE, Kan. – Two workers are dead after falling between 500 and 800 feet from a broadcast tower in rural Douglas County.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says the two men fell around 9:30 a.m. while installing equipment on the tower two miles east of Lawrence. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff's Lt. Kari Wempe (WEM'-pee) says the office isn't releasing the men's names pending notification of next of kin.
She says investigators from the Sheriff's Office and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are looking into what caused an equipment malfunction that allowed the workers to fall.
