U.S. Forces Detain 6 in Raids Targeting Al Qaeda in Iraq

U.S. troops detained 25 suspected insurgents in raids against Al Qaeda in Iraq over the past two days, the U.S. military said Thursday.

Nine suspects were arrested near Amiriyah, some 25 miles west of Baghdad, the military said in a statement. They were alleged associates of a regional al-Qaida emir, it said.

Near Tarmiyah, 30 miles north of the Iraqi capital, U.S. troops captured seven suspects in a series of raids on buildings there, the military said. One of those in custody was believed to be a close associate of Omar al-Baghdadi, who heads the Al Qaeda front group Islamic State in Iraq.

Six suspects were detained in Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad, and another three were taken into custody in the capital, the statement said. The Baghdad suspects were believed to be members of a car bomb network responsible for attacks on civilians, it added.
